How do you manage your Reliability Data?

Ninety percent of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. Our current output of data is roughly 2.5 quintillion bytes a day*. As the world steadily becomes more connected that number is only set to grow over the coming years.

In the modern Manufacturing facility today, the Reliability data comes from three key sources:

  1. The Asset itself, via sensors that feed directly into the DCS/ Pi/ Historian data system
  2. The CMMS via work order history
  3. The People via facilitation exercises such as FMECA/RCM

Four questions we ask our customers:

  • Do you have enough data to help you improve Reliability?
  • Is the Reliability data of the right quality and can you trust it?
  • Do you collect Reliability data at the right level?
  • Do you currently have a Reliability data policy?

Every organisation has data, but are we using it to our advantage to make informed decisions in the world of Reliability?

The debates around data, the quality and the amount of data have been going on in the industry for many years. With the rise in modern data collection techniques, the internet of things, more data is going to be made available to the end-users.

The question remains – If we already have more data than we can currently handle is the situation going to get worse?

Companies are now recognizing the benefits of creating a new type of policy – The Data Management Policy.

Some companies currently include this within their Reliability and Engineering Strategy Policy and it provides a corporate framework with defined roles and responsibilities for the collection, quality, storage, security, maintenance and analysis of data.

With the increase of data particularly coming from more sophisticated collection systems then the management of that data needs to be a high priority within an organisation.

So, is it time to review your own data sources, possibly creating a Company Reliability Data Policy and presenting a new motto within your organisation………?

’Reliability data will be collected and acted upon to improve the safety of people and the availability of our assets’
